Current Uhuru Projects in Africa

For the past two years the Uhuru Movement has initiated several projects in Sierra Leone. Supporters like you have made these projects possible:

  • Installation of rainwater harvesting systems
  • Trainings for healthcare workers to combat preventable diseases
  • Purchase of a boat motor to help African fisheries in the village of Oloshoro compete with large foreign trawlers
  • Uhuru Radio FM station in the city of Makeni

African People's Socialist Party of Sierra Leone (APSP-SL) holds founding conference in November

Founding Conference of the African People's Socialist Party-Sierra Leone

The conference, held Nov. 16-18 in Freetown was attended by over 500 people who agreed to form the first workers’ party on African soil.

They adopted a “revolutionary national democratic program” that includes the nationalization of the mining industries so mineral wealth of the country can be used to meet the needs of the people rather than feed the profits of foreign corporations.

Uhuru leader Omali Yeshitela delivered the keynote presentation to the conference. He says, “It’s a new day in African politics. We are now beginning to realize our long-held vision for a unified Africa, shared by Kwame Nkrumah, Marcus Garvey and others.”

Tackling infant and maternal mortality

Dr. Aisha Fields (center) in Sierra Leone this November

Dr. Aisha Fields, a St. Petersburg, FL physicist, coordinates the Uhuru Movement’s development projects in Sierra Leone. She returned from last month’s visit with a call to raise funds for an urgently needed birthing center and to conduct a 2010 national assessment project tackling maternal mortality.

She reports that “African women in Sierra Leone are dying in childbirth at an alarming rate and these deaths are completely preventable. What they need is nutritional supplements and basic medical supplies. Traditional birth attendants in the community are working hard to meet the needs of the pregnant women and we intend to support their efforts."

Demand for Uhuru Movement sweeping Africa

African people elsewhere on the continent are calling on the Uhuru Movement to help organize similar conferences and projects in their areas.

This fund drive will also support sending organizers to southern and east Africa in January.
